What does "neuroaffirming" mean?

At Diverge Learning, it means that our practices are aligned with the neurodiversity paradigm. We provide space for students to be their authentic selves by prioritizing autonomy, agency, acceptance, and self-advocacy. We show students how to work with their natural ways of being, rather than against them, and how to recognize and accommodate their needs, rather than suppress them. More details here.

Do you have to be neurodivergent to attend?

No, students of all neurotypes are welcome! In fact, a more diverse community is an ideal way to learn about people's differences and how to balance differing needs. If you value acceptance, community building, and having fun while learning, then Diverge is the place for you.

Do you allow parents to stay even though it is a drop off program?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We understand that children sometimes need to adjust to a new space slowly, and part of feeling safe during that transition can include having their safe person with them. Or, perhaps your child needs 1:1 support and you'd like to provide that for them. Either way, we are more than happy to work with you to give your child the best possible experience with us.

Do you allow outside RBTs?

This one's a bit tricky. Generally speaking, ABA (and behaviorism in general) does not align with neuroaffirming practice. However, in the interest of accessibility for students with higher support needs, attendance with an RBT may be considered on a case-by-case basis, provided they can sufficiently adjust their practice to align with our approach while they are in our space.

Why the different kind of schedule?

A place that one of my kids goes to (Conscious Kids Association) has this kind of schedule, and I just really love it! The six weeks on/two weeks off schedule is really helpful for keeping the learning mindset fresh and avoiding burnout (which is especially important for us neurodivergent folks).
